How do I turn long videos into short clips?
ZippyClip Team · 2026-10-28T11:00:00+00:00

To turn long videos into short clips, pick the strongest self-contained moments, cut each one to 3 minutes or less, reframe it to vertical 9:16, add captions and a hook in the first seconds, then export and post a clean file. Do it by hand, or let an AI clipping tool find, cut, reframe and caption the moments.
Key takeaways
- One long video, many posts: a podcast, webinar or YouTube video can become a whole set of Shorts, Reels and TikToks.
- Five jobs per clip: pick the moment, cut it, reframe to 9:16, add captions, open with a hook.
- Length limit: YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels both allow clips up to 3 minutes.
- Post clean files: Instagram shows watermarked reels to fewer people, and TikTok keeps unoriginal reuploads with another app's visible watermark out of the For You feed.
- Manual or AI: manual gives full control; AI tools find, cut and caption the moments for you, which helps if you have lots of long videos. Our pick is ZippyClip, which also posts the clips for you.
What are the steps to turn long videos into short clips?
Every method, manual or AI, comes down to the same seven steps.
- Pick the moments. Look for parts that make sense on their own: a strong opinion, a useful tip, a story with a payoff, or a surprising or funny line.
- Cut each clip. Start right on the interesting line, with no warm-up. Keep it under 3 minutes for Shorts and Reels.
- Reframe to 9:16. Crop the horizontal footage to vertical and keep the speaker in frame. Keep important text and faces inside the safe zone, away from the app's buttons.
- Add captions. Many people watch with the sound off, so burn captions into the video. Read them through and fix mistakes.
- Add a hook. Open on your most interesting line, or put a short headline on screen in the first seconds.
- Export clean. Export at 720p or higher (Shorts accept up to 1080p), with no other app's watermark.
- Post on a schedule you can keep. Write a title and caption for each platform, then post regularly.
How do you choose which moments to clip?
Choose moments that a stranger would understand without seeing the rest of the video. A clip with one clear idea and a payoff works better than a slice from the middle of a long explanation.
Start the clip at the most interesting sentence. Shorts creator Jenny Hoyos, writing on YouTube's official blog (January 2025), says you have about one second to hook someone on Shorts. That's her opinion, not an algorithm rule, but it's a good reason to cut the warm-up.
TikTok's own creative guide, written for ads, says to get the core message across in the first 3 seconds. If you need more hook ideas, see our guide on how to write a hook that stops the scroll.
What size and length should short clips be?
Short clips should be vertical 9:16 and no longer than 3 minutes. Here's what each platform says, as of October 2026:
- YouTube Shorts: vertical (square or taller), up to 3 minutes since October 15, 2024, max 1080p upload.
- Instagram Reels: up to 3 minutes, extended from 90 seconds in January 2025.
- TikTok: its creative guide recommends vertical 9:16, at least 720p, with key content kept inside the safe zone.
No platform publishes an "ideal" clip length. Make each clip as long as the idea needs and no longer.
How do you add captions and a hook to each clip?
Burn captions into the video so they show for every viewer, then check every word. TikTok's creative guide recommends captions or text overlays on short videos.
For the hook, either start the clip on a strong line or add a one-line headline on screen at the start. Some AI clippers do this for you. OpusClip, for example, has an "Auto headline" feature that writes that opening line.
Our guide on how to add captions to videos automatically covers caption tools and settings in more detail.
Should you clip manually or use AI?
Use manual clipping if you only have a video or two and want full control. Use an AI clipping tool if you regularly record long videos and don't have hours to scrub through them.
Manual clipping means watching the whole video, marking the good parts, then cutting, cropping and captioning each clip yourself in an editor. It's free and precise, but slow.
AI clipping scans the speech in your video, picks likely highlights, cuts them, reframes them to vertical and adds captions. You review the results and fix anything that's off. It's much faster, but you should still check each clip before it goes live.
There's also a free middle option if you post on YouTube. When YouTube introduced "Edit into a Short" in July 2022, it let you pick a segment of your own long video in the YouTube mobile app and turn it into a Short that links back to the original video. Only the person who uploaded the video could use it, and the segment limit at launch was 60 seconds. We couldn't confirm on YouTube's help pages whether that limit has changed since, so check the app.

1. ZippyClip (our pick)
ZippyClip is our pick because it handles the whole job, from finding the moments to posting the clips.
Drop in a long recording, such as a podcast or webinar. Its viral moment detection finds the moments with the highest viral potential and cuts them into separate shorts, already captioned and resized. Smart vertical reframing tracks the subject for 9:16, and word-level captions can be styled the way you want. It also removes pauses and filler words.
You can edit by describing what you want in plain English, for example: "Cut this long video into 3 viral shorts." When you want manual control, there's a real timeline editor too.
Then it posts. ZippyClip publishes to YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X from one screen. You can schedule posts every few hours, and the AI writes the titles, descriptions, hashtags and tags for each platform. When you publish a long-form video, it can also cut a short of under 3 minutes from it and post that as well. With watch folders, you drop a video into a folder and it gets edited and published with no more clicks.
ZippyClip is a desktop app for Windows and macOS, and your videos stay on your computer. It's free to download, with 50 API tokens to start and a watermark on exports. Pro removes the watermark and adds TikTok publishing, unlimited watch folders, Google Drive automations and scheduling. Instagram says it shows watermarked reels to fewer people, and TikTok publishing needs Pro anyway, so plan on Pro if you'll post there.
2. OpusClip
OpusClip is built for people with a steady flow of long videos. It picks highlights, gives each clip a Virality Score from 0 to 99 (Hook, Flow, Value, Trend) on Starter and Pro, reframes automatically and adds AI captions.
As of October 2026, the free plan gives 60 credits a month. Clips are watermarked, up to 1080p, and can't be exported after 3 days. Starter is $15/month (monthly billing only, 150 credits). Pro is $29/month, or $174/year, with 300 credits and a social scheduler.
One credit covers one minute of the source video, so a 30-minute webinar uses 30 credits. Starter can post right away to YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels, but scheduling needs Pro.
3. Klap
Klap turns a YouTube link or uploaded file into vertical clips. It works best with speech-heavy videos like podcasts, interviews and tutorials, because it finds the clips through speech detection.
It reframes to keep the speaker in view, adds styled subtitles and suggested post captions, and gives each clip a viral score. You can share or schedule clips to TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and LinkedIn.
As of October 2026, plans billed yearly are Basic $14/month (100 clips), Pro $39/month (300 clips) and Pro+ $94/month (1,000 clips). Klap's homepage lists Pro at $29/month, which doesn't match its pricing page, so check the current price before you buy. You can try one video free without a credit card.
4. CapCut
CapCut's AI Clip Maker cuts a long video into short clips, crops 16:9 footage to vertical with subject tracking, and adds captions you can edit. Because CapCut is also a full editor, you can fine-tune every clip by hand.
CapCut has a free plan, and Pro is $19.99/month as of October 2026. CapCut's tool page calls the clip maker free but doesn't list its limits. We didn't find scheduling on CapCut's official pages, so plan to post the clips yourself.
Can you post the same clip on TikTok, Reels and Shorts?
Yes, as long as you upload a clean file to each one. TikTok's For You feed rules make reuploads with no new creative changes, including videos with another app's visible watermark or logo, ineligible for the For You feed. Instagram's ranking explainer says it shows low-resolution or watermarked reels, and reels with borders, to fewer people.
So export once without any watermark, then upload that file to each platform. Write a fresh title and caption for each one. If you'd rather not do that by hand, see how to auto-post videos to TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.
How often should you post your clips?
Post as often as you can keep up. YouTube's own Shorts tips say regularity matters most.
One long video can be split into many clips. Klap, for example, claims its tool finds about five clips per minute of video, though that's the company's own figure. A scheduler, or a tool like ZippyClip that posts every few hours, lets you batch the work and keep a steady rhythm.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a short clip be?
No platform publishes an official ideal length. As of October 2026, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels both allow clips up to 3 minutes, so make each clip as long as its one idea needs and no longer.
What aspect ratio should short clips be?
Use vertical 9:16. TikTok's creative guide recommends 9:16 at 720p or higher, and YouTube Shorts accept vertical uploads up to 1080p.
Is there a free way to turn long videos into short clips?
Yes. CapCut has a free plan and calls its AI Clip Maker free, OpusClip's free plan gives 60 credits a month with watermarked clips, and ZippyClip is free to download with 50 API tokens and a watermark on exports. YouTube also launched a free "Edit into a Short" option in 2022 for your own videos.
Do watermarks hurt the reach of reposted clips?
They can. Instagram says it shows watermarked or low-resolution reels to fewer people, and TikTok makes reuploads with another app's visible watermark ineligible for the For You feed. Export one clean file and upload it to each platform.
Which tool is best for turning long videos into short clips?
If you want the clips made and posted for you, ZippyClip finds the viral moments, captions and reframes them, then publishes to YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and X on a schedule. OpusClip and Klap are strong AI clippers for podcasts and talking-head videos, and CapCut suits people who want AI clips plus a full manual editor.
